Kuala Lumpur:First paragraph of the news story.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed support for Sultan Nazrin Shah's call to embrace the principles of shura (consultation) and adab (civility and proper conduct) among Muslims. The Sultan of Perak highlighted these principles during an address at the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) meeting.

Anwar emphasized that shura extends beyond Western concepts of democracy, stressing the importance of consultation, patience, and wisdom in decision-making, with ultimate trust placed in Allah. He also highlighted the significance of adab, which encompasses education, learning, consultation, and interpersonal relations.

Sultan Nazrin, who chairs the MKI, advocated for a culture of shura and adab to be nurtured across families, educational institutions, organizations, and society. He stated that shura allows for diverse perspectives, while adab ensures respectful and wise handling of differences.

Anwar noted the relevance of these principles in today's context, where Muslims face competing ideas in religious and societal discussions. He called for these principles to guide the government, opposition, and those involved in Islamic preaching.

Furthermore, Anwar urged a focus on Islam's intellectual heritage, suggesting that Jakim should organize scholarly programs to engage with the Islamic intellectual tradition. He cautioned against disregarding established interpretations and recognized scholars, emphasizing the need for continuity with the Islamic legacy.

Finally, Anwar encouraged Jakim to enhance religious understanding, particularly among young people and the Orang Asli community, and to disseminate Sultan Nazrin's address widely.
