Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced plans to reach out to his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, concerning the ongoing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar emphasized Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair in monitoring developments between the two nations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar indicated that Malaysia would release a formal statement following his discussions with Paetongtarn. This announcement came after Anwar attended Friday prayers at Surau Al-Ikhwan in Desa Pinggiran Putra.
The border conflict intensified on May 28 when Thai and Cambodian troops clashed in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. In response, Cambodia declared its intention to take the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Meanwhile, Thailand has expressed its dedication to resolving the dispute amicably, adhering to international law and previous agreements with Cambodia.
Malaysia took over the ASEAN Chairmanship from Laos on January 1, under a theme of Inclusivity and Sustainability, highlighting the nation's goals for a unified and thriving ASEAN. This is Malaysia's fifth tenure as ASEAN Chair, having previously held the position in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
