Anwar Urges Prabowo’s Intervention in Felda’s Indonesian Investment Troubles

Bangi: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that he had officially communicated with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto regarding the Federal Land Development Authority's (Felda) investment issues in Indonesia, specifically concerning PT Eagle High Plantations Tbk (EHP).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision to reach out to President Prabowo was driven by the looming possibility of financial losses amounting to RM2.5 billion due to past decisions by Felda's previous management. Anwar highlighted that the anticipated returns may only reach around RM200 million, a significant shortfall. The investment is currently embroiled in legal proceedings in Indonesia, and Felda has not yet managed to recover the funds as EHP contests the matter in court.

Anwar revealed these details during a meeting with Felda's senior management and managers at Hotel Tenera in Bangi. The session was attended by key figures such as Felda chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir and director-general Datuk Dr Suzana Idayu Wati Osman. The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity for Felda's management at all levels to grasp the magnitude of the challenges facing the agency's recovery initiatives.

Anwar stressed the importance of managers understanding the severity of the issues and clarified that the existing problems were not the fault of current managers, but rather a consequence that everyone must collectively address.

He further explained that matters concerning investigations, enforcement, and court proceedings are distinct, yet it is crucial for managers to comprehend the full scope of the problems. Anwar urged all management levels to focus on the agency's real issues and not be swayed by narratives that might undermine the significance of governance.

In terms of broader recovery efforts, Anwar reassured that the government is dedicated to expediting basic welfare projects, such as funding for home repairs for managers and settlers, without waiting for next year's budget allocation. He reiterated that the focus on governance and accountability is aimed at protecting public trust and restoring Felda's esteemed position as a national institution.
