Anwar Urges Thailand and Cambodia to Exercise Maximum Restraint After Border Clashes

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Thailand and Cambodia to exercise maximum restraint, maintain open channels of communication, and make full use of the mechanisms in place following reports of armed clashes along their common border. In a Facebook post, Anwar expressed his deep concern over the reports and extended his condolences to the families of those killed or injured.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized that Malaysia is ready to support steps that could help restore calm and prevent further incidents, highlighting that Thailand and Cambodia are close partners of the country and key members of ASEAN. Anwar warned that the renewed fighting could undermine the efforts made to stabilize relations between the two nations.

Anwar noted that the region could not afford to let long-standing disputes escalate into cycles of confrontation. He stressed that the immediate priority should be to halt the fighting, protect civilians, and return to a diplomatic path supported by international law and the neighborly spirit on which ASEAN depends.

Earlier, international media reported that Thailand had conducted air strikes along its disputed border with Cambodia. The recent clashes resulted in the death of at least one Thai soldier and injuries to four others in the easternmost province of Ubon Ratchathani.
