Kuala Lumpur: This year's ASEAN chairmanship under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has received commendation from world-renowned economist Professor Dr Jeffrey D. Sachs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sachs described Anwar's efforts in addressing the Myanmar crisis as constructive and aligned with ASEAN's collective goals.
Sachs, a Columbia University professor and President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, stated that Malaysia's proactive approach showcases responsible diplomacy, promoting ASEAN peace and stability. He emphasized that ASEAN's leadership in ensuring regional peace is crucial and not a form of interference.
Sachs praised Anwar's role as ASEAN Chair, highlighting the Prime Minister's remarkable leadership in facilitating intra-ASEAN solutions. He clarified that Anwar's actions are not interference but rather efforts to help ASEAN succeed and maintain internal peace.
While Sachs did not recommend specific policy changes regarding ASEAN's non-interference principle amid the Myanmar crisis, he noted a global trend towards stronger regional cooperation. He emphasized the importance of strong regional groups, including ASEAN, in ensuring the success of individual member countries.
Sachs also mentioned ASEAN's growing diplomatic role in addressing global pressures and uncertainties. He commended Anwar for providing effective leadership during his presidency, describing it as successful.
Referring to recent regional meetings like the 46th ASEAN Summit and ASEAN-GCC dialogues, Sachs highlighted Malaysia's effective stewardship and ASEAN's commitment to unity. He noted the successful initiatives of Malaysia's presidency through these high-level engagements.
The meetings saw participation from ASEAN leaders including the Sultan of Brunei, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, among others. Timor-Leste's Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmo, attended as an Observer, alongside ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn.
GCC delegates such as the Emir of Qatar, Bahrain's Crown Prince, and Oman's Deputy Prime Minister were also present, exemplifying the wide-reaching diplomatic engagement facilitated by Malaysia's leadership.
