Selangor: Selangor gymnast Cadence Teh Zi Qi struck gold twice at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 today, retaining the women's individual all-around title and helping the hosts win the team event at Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak (DECTAR), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Cadence successfully defended her all-around crown with 48.550 points, recording scores of 12.050 in vault, 11.400 in uneven bars, 13.350 in balance beam, and 11.750 in floor exercise. Meanwhile, Sarawak's Aurin Zulkarnain took silver with 44.500 points, and Federal Territories' Annabelle Ho Syin Yee and Penang's Amanda Ching Lee Wern shared bronze after both finished with 42.250 points.
Earlier in the competition, Cadence teamed up with Nicole Wong Ziyi, Airisha Zuraidi, Wong Zi Qi, Leong Yee Shean, and Haifa Izzazi Mohd Faizul to secure the women's team gold for Selangor with a total score of 169.300 points. Federal Territories settled for silver with 166.300 points, while Johor claimed bronze with 157.000 points.
Despite a shaky start in the all-around competition, Cadence recovered strongly after an initial fall on the uneven bars. She managed to maintain composure and excelled on the remaining apparatus to successfully retain her title. Cadence expressed relief and determination as she shared her thoughts on her performance. She acknowledged the need for better control of her nerves and maintaining focus as areas for improvement.
Looking ahead, the 17-year-old national gymnast aims to raise the difficulty of her balance beam routine to the level planned for the 2026 Asian Games. Cadence is set to compete in the uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise apparatus finals, scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday.
