Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) aims to elevate Malaysia's position on the global stage with the country's ASEAN chairmanship this year as well as bid for the UN Habitat General Assembly Presidency this year. Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that KPKT is set to host the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF), the ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF), the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC), the ASEAN Property Summit, and the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) Annual Meeting.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Nga emphasized the importance of showcasing Malaysia's capabilities during this significant period, stating, "The world is watching us, and we must show them what we have to offer. To take the ministry to greater heights, we must enhance the quality of public service by strengthening integrity practices and encouraging honest feedback." These remarks were made at the conclusion of the ministry's three-day strategic planning meeting, where senior management evaluated action plans and tackled critical issues.
Additionally, Malaysia is placing a bid for the UN-Habitat General Assembly Presidency for the 2026-2029 term through the ministry. Throughout the strategic meeting, KPKT detailed approximately 122 action plans for 2025, with a core focus on introducing the Urban Renewal Act aimed at redeveloping deteriorating urban areas.
The meeting underscored several essential priorities, such as enforcing community service penalties for littering violations and managing Indian settlements that came under the ministry's jurisdiction last year. The ministry also aspires to cultivate high-level talents or subject matter experts to provide efficient public services.
Furthermore, KPKT is aiming for global leadership in sustainable urban development by bolstering its presence at both national and international arenas.
