ASEAN Chairmanship: Govt Considers Inter-university Programme.

Kuala Lumpur: The government is considering the establishment of a programme to bring together universities or defence training institutes across Southeast Asian countries to organise relevant activities in conjunction with Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN next year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the programme could be held alongside the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM), which will be chaired by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister suggested that the programme could involve students from these institutions, providing them with valuable exposure. He also mentioned the possibility of inviting one or two other defence ministers to visit these universities as part of the initiative, further enhancing the educational experience for the students involved.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim shared these ideas during the ‘Temu Anwar’ programme at the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM). He highlighted the significant expect
ations for Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN, noting that numerous major meetings are scheduled for next year, including the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit.

Malaysia is set to officially assume the Chair of ASEAN on January 1, 2025.
