Kuala Lumpur: The inaugural ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-China Summit marks a landmark moment in international cooperation, bringing together three dynamic partners with shared aspirations and remarkable achievements, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. In his opening remarks at the summit today, Anwar said that, for the first time, the three regions are convening in this unique format - each with a rich civilisational legacy, deep-rooted cultures, and shared aspirations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that the regions involved are recognized for their achievements. The GCC has emerged as a center of financial strength, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation, with energy remaining its core pillar. He noted that China's transformation has had global repercussions, reshaping the regional economy and beyond. Their efforts to combat poverty have been effective, and their economic performance, digitalization, and advances in artificial intelligence are noteworthy.
Anwar also emphasized the longstanding connections among ASEAN member states, tracing back to the ancient Silk Road and vibrant maritime networks of Southeast Asia. Historically, centers like Malacca exemplified this tradition, serving as vital crossroads linking East and West. He remarked that the region's spirit of trust and collaborative friendship remains a defining characteristic on the global stage.
He further attributed ASEAN's lasting peace and economic dynamism to a shared commitment, describing the bloc as one of the most peaceful regions and fastest-growing economies globally. Anwar expressed hope that the summit would showcase the potential achievements when partners collaborate with mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose.
Despite challenges, Anwar conveyed confidence that ASEAN, the GCC, and China could leverage their unique strengths to shape a more connected, resilient, and prosperous future. ASEAN has demonstrated that regionalism, anchored in consensus, respect, and openness, can succeed. The longstanding partnerships with the GCC and China provide an opportunity to elevate these ties.
The summit was attended by notable leaders, including Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, China's Premier Li Qiang, and several ASEAN leaders. Additionally, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmo participated as an observer, along with ASEAN secretary-general Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.
