ASEAN Leaders Urged to Enhance Unity and Defense Cooperation Amid Security Challenges

Cebu:Kuala Lumpur ASEAN must bolster its unity, expand practical defense cooperation, and foster open dialogue to confront regional security threats, as emphasized by Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Teodoro addressed these issues at the 20th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) in Cebu, Philippines. He laid out three main priorities strengthening ASEAN unity, enhancing practical cooperation, and encouraging frank dialogue among member states.

Teodoro highlighted the necessity of internal stability and unity for sustaining cooperation within the bloc as the world becomes increasingly fragmented. He urged ASEAN members to uphold the principles of centrality, mutual respect for sovereignty, peaceful dispute resolution, and the renunciation of force.

He stressed the importance of resolving differences, including those in the South China Sea, through peaceful and legal means. He also underscored the role of practical cooperation through ADMM and ADMM-Plus in building trust among ASEAN defense establishments and delivering tangible benefits to the populace.

The Defence Secretary pointed to progress in maritime security, safeguarding critical underwater infrastructure, and facilitating people-to-people exchanges. He advocated for broader cooperation to secure food and energy supplies against disruptions from conflicts beyond the region, especially with the impending super El Niño affecting Southeast Asia.

Moreover, Teodoro called for candid discussions on public safety and regional stability threats, recognizing the influence of national policies and diplomatic considerations on public statements. He emphasized the value of trust and candor in bilateral meetings and other engagements to build mutual understanding and address shared challenges.

The Philippines, as part of its 2026 ASEAN chairmanship, is hosting the 20th ADMM and the 13th ADMM-Plus from October 28 to 29.
