ASEAN-Pakistan Media Exchange Programme Enhances Regional Media Collaboration

Islamabad: The ASEAN-Pakistan Media/Journalist Exchange Programme has emerged as a crucial platform for ASEAN journalists, focusing on professional development, cross-cultural understanding, and regional media collaboration.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme offers training sessions, discussions, and first-hand experiences that provide participants with valuable insights into Pakistan's media landscape and socio-political dynamics. This exposure equips journalists to produce more balanced and accurate reporting, challenging stereotypical portrayals of Pakistan in international news.

Bernama TV Malay Programme producer Riyadh Zuhdi Loksin highlighted the significance of the training and knowledge-sharing sessions. He noted that these sessions were instrumental in comprehending the media dynamics within ASEAN and Pakistan. Loksin emphasized that the programme fosters stronger professional connections and a dedication to ethical journalism, which can lead to lasting impacts on regional reporting.

Meanwhile, Vinafel Araneta Pilapil from the People's Television Network Inc. in the Philippines described the programme as vital for strengthening ASEAN-Pakistan relations. She valued the cultural exchanges and the insights into different journalistic practices, which contradicted many preconceived notions about Pakistan.

Philippine journalist Daniel Amos Manalastas stressed the importance of combating misinformation. He found that the warm and hospitable nature of the Pakistani people contradicted their portrayal in international media. Manalastas underscored the responsibility of journalists to present facts accurately and to dispel misconceptions, gaining new perspectives from his international counterparts.

Thai Mass Communication Officer Nattapon Samuhaseneeto emphasized media cooperation between ASEAN and Pakistan. He pointed out the significance of sharing critical information between neighboring countries and how the programme facilitated this exchange. Nattapon also appreciated the opportunity to learn about Pakistan's culture and economic sectors, such as tourism, trade, and investment.

The ASEAN-Pakistan Media Exchange Programme, held from February 17 to 22, was organized by Pakistan's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with support from the ASEAN Secretariat. It brought together 23 journalists from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, aiming to foster media collaboration and strengthen regional ties.
