ASEAN-US Partnership Strengthened with Joint Vision Statement Adoption

Kuala lumpur: ASEAN and the United States are set to adopt the ASEAN-US Joint Vision Statement aimed at bolstering the relationship between the two regions to ensure a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is serving as ASEAN Chair this year, highlighted that the joint statement demonstrates a shared commitment to transforming cooperative efforts into tangible benefits for the people of both regions. Anwar emphasized that ASEAN-US relations have evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership, underpinned by mutual aspirations for peace and prosperity. He noted the economic potential of both regions, stating that the dynamic economies of the US and Southeast Asia could usher in a new era of prosperity.

Anwar revealed that two-way trade between ASEAN and the US hit a record USD453 billion last year, which has been instrumental in supporting millions of jobs and businesses across both regions. He expressed optimism about the future, stating that the promise of the ASEAN-US relationship is poised to grow even stronger.

The summit was attended by US President Donald Trump, along with other ASEAN leaders. Anwar commended Trump's comprehensive plan to address the Gaza conflict, highlighting it as a beacon of hope for diplomatic solutions in seemingly intractable conflicts. He expressed confidence in Trump's leadership in achieving a just and durable peace.

Additionally, Anwar acknowledged the significant role President Trump played in facilitating the KL Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia. He praised the accord as a testament to the strong political will of the leaders and people of both nations. Anwar and Trump witnessed the signing of this landmark agreement, known as the KL Peace Accord, by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, during the 47th ASEAN Summit.
