Kuala lumpur: University students should capitalize on the opportunities presented by the repeal of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) to more boldly express their views and champion youth interests, stated UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He emphasized that the previous limitations on student involvement in political activities both domestically and internationally had now been alleviated, allowing for greater student participation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the repeal of AUKU was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on August 15, with the intention of granting broader freedom and democratic space to student movements. Anwar further instructed on August 26 that any disciplinary actions against students for voicing criticisms or academic opinions should be promptly withdrawn.

Addressing delegates of the Overseas UMNO Club and UMNOSiswa, Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister, highlighted the importance of the youth voice in aiding leadership to grasp the challenges faced by university students. This includes understanding their perspectives on the nation's political future and potential enhancements to the political system.

Muhammad Amir Ikram Mohd Fadil, president of the Overseas UMNO Club Newcastle branch, recognized the repeal of AUKU as a chance for students to speak out more freely on various issues. He noted that while some matters might be sensitive, they often pertain to government policies and reflect real problems on the ground.

He advised that while the removal of restrictions offers a platform for open expression, students should exercise this freedom responsibly by thoroughly understanding issues before voicing their views. The Overseas UMNO Club, he mentioned, remains a crucial link for the Malaysian community abroad to ensure their opinions reach the appropriate authorities.

This year's assembly saw participation from 57 delegates from Egypt, Jordan, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Indonesia, marking the largest turnout for the Overseas UMNO Club to date.
