Australian PM Urges Swift Security Measures After MP Attack

Canberra:Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a review of security measures for politicians following an attack on independent MP Helen Haines.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Albanese addressed the Labour Party in Canberra, emphasizing the need to expedite the review of MPs' security systems after Haines was critically injured in an incident earlier this month.

Albanese mentioned that MPs have suggested various security enhancements, including duress alarms or panic buttons, to promptly alert authorities in case of an attack. He committed to a rapid governmental response to these proposals.

The Prime Minister noted an increase in aggressive and threatening behavior both online and offline towards politicians, highlighting that women members of the caucus are particularly targeted with misogynistic threats.

Haines, serving as an independent MP since 2019 for an electorate northeast of Melbourne, suffered severe injuries, losing both legs after being hit by a car outside her office on October 19. Albanese characterized the event as a deliberate attack. Haines remains hospitalized in a serious but stable condition.

Finance, Women, Government Services and the Public Service Minister Katy Gallagher stated that nine MPs would receive security enhancements at their offices following the attack. She also noted improved security measures for public areas in Parliament House.
