Kuala lumpur: National track cycling star Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang has sought clarity from the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and National Sports Council (MSN) on whether Malaysia still needs his services for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, in a nine-page statement posted on Instagram today, Mohd Azizulhasni explained the LA28 qualification process and outlined his position on the future of his career. He emphasized that the current issue is not about whether he wishes to continue racing towards LA28 but rather if Malaysia requires his participation for the event. He highlighted that clarity on this matter is essential for him to plan his training, competitive engagements, and manage commitments involving his family and sponsors.
Mohd Azizulhasni elaborated on the LA28 qualification process, stating that cyclists need to compete over two seasons, each consisting of one World Championships, one Continental Championships, and three World Cup events. The world's top eight teams will qualify for the team sprint, while individual keirin and sprint events will be limited to the world's top 30 riders. Currently ranked 14th in the world after coming out of retirement, he believes he can improve his standings with consistent performances.
He clarified that financial support is not his primary concern, expressing his willingness to secure private backing and compete as a fully professional athlete if needed. He stated that he is ready to compete without receiving grants from KBS and MSN, suggesting that these funds could be allocated to other riders. His emphasis remains on having a robust support system to ensure his preparation and recovery are maintained at a high standard.
Mohd Azizulhasni proposed a hybrid training model, splitting his time between Melbourne and Malaysia based on his training, competition, and sponsorship requirements. Moreover, he called for a written agreement regarding athletes' rights to the qualification points they have earned, to prevent scenarios where athletes are utilized to gather points but later face changes in their prospects.
The nine-page statement was his effort to address lingering questions and seek definitive answers from KBS and MSN about his involvement in Malaysia's mission for LA28.
