Kuala lumpur: A clear and comprehensive policy on refugee issues needs to be established to ensure that national security concerns are balanced with humanitarian considerations, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He emphasized the importance of such a policy to prevent drastic or emotionally-driven actions, especially given the increasing number of refugees in the country, which has placed certain pressures on society and the government.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amirudin highlighted the need for a balanced approach in addressing refugee issues, stating that, while it is crucial to provide protection, the country is also burdened by the large number of refugees. He stressed the importance of a clear policy that considers humanitarian aspects alongside security concerns. Amirudin made these remarks to reporters after attending the National Aspirations with Youth (NANBA) for the Central Zone Series 2/2026.

Commenting specifically on the issue of Rohingya refugees, which has recently gained attention on social media, Amirudin clarified that some of the locations mentioned are under the administration of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur rather than Selangor. He warned that taking actions based solely on emotions, without being guided by a balanced policy, could damage Malaysia's international image.

Amirudin posed rhetorical questions regarding the government's stance on refugees, questioning whether Malaysia would close its doors to all refugees, including those from Syria and Gaza, stressing the need to avoid decisions driven by the feelings or moods of certain individuals, which could lead to unjust actions.

He further stated that authorities remain firm in dealing with any legal violations by refugees or foreigners, such as running businesses without licenses or illegally occupying residential premises. Amirudin assured that those involved in criminal activities would face appropriate actions, reiterating the government's commitment to maintaining law and order.
