Kuala Lumpur:The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is optimistic that the Sports Matching Grant (GPS) announced in Budget 2027 will continue to support its activities and those of other sports associations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz emphasized the association's previous reliance on private sector partnerships to carry out various programs. The newly announced RM30 million GPS initiative by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to provide additional backing to the governing body.
Tengku Zafrul highlighted the financial challenges faced by the association, noting that managing BAM requires approximately RM55 million annually. He expressed hope that the grant would alleviate some of these financial pressures. However, he stated that BAM has yet to determine how it will leverage the GPS, as the implementation details and eligibility criteria are still pending finalization.
He acknowledged the RM460 million allocation for sports development as a positive step, expressing optimism that it would enhance the focus on sports not only in terms of athlete achievements but also as a significant industry capable of contributing to national economic growth.
Tengku Zafrul further remarked on the economic potential of sports, drawing parallels with other sectors like entertainment. He stressed the importance of viewing sports as a standalone industry, which is essential for fostering a sustainable sports industry through private sector involvement and enhancing the commercial value of sports in Malaysia.
