Lumut: Three Belgian investment companies are set to visit the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC) this June, as announced by the Perak government following their official visit to Europe last week. The companies involved are Belgian Scrap Terminal (BST), Soenen Group Green Vessel Recycling, and Steinberg Logistics International.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, BST is known for its expertise in separating recyclable materials, particularly in the dismantling and recycling of old ships. Soenen Group specializes in sustainable ship disposal and refurbishment, while Steinberg Logistics provides integrated logistics services to support the maritime industry ecosystem. This visit was confirmed by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad during a press conference at the State Government's Customer Engagement Day.
In addition to the Belgian firms, French multinational company Saint-Gobain, currently operating in the Kanthan Industrial Park, Chemor, has shown interest in expanding its operations. Saarani mentioned that Saint-Gobain plans to invest an additional RM200 million, with the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) proposing a relocation to the Silver Valley Technology Park (SVTP). Saint-Gobain has already visited SVTP to assess its potential for supporting their new investment.
Addressing another issue, Saarani responded to public complaints regarding livestock roaming on roads, posing safety risks to motorists. He urged farmers to utilize designated grazing areas to mitigate this problem. "The presence of roaming animals not only disrupts farming activities but also endangers road users," Saarani noted. He highlighted that cattle and buffaloes, often raised by small-scale farmers without proper enclosures, frequently wander onto roads and farmland, creating a serious concern for the community.
