Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Hainan International Media Centre (HIMC) today launched a special documentary highlighting Hainan's development as a Free Trade Port and the opportunities it presents for greater regional engagement. Titled '2026: Towards The Hainan Free Trade Port', the documentary was jointly launched by Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and Hainan Daily Press Group president Shang Lin, who is leading the HIMC delegation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong emphasized that the collaboration goes beyond the conventional exchange of information and content between media organizations. He noted that the documentary marks the beginning of efforts to highlight developments in Hainan, particularly its free trade port, which he described as a significant economic experiment in China with potential relevance to Malaysia.
Wong explained, "Most media groups, they have the exchange of information and content exchange, but in our case, both of us have gone a step further. We are producing programs jointly, so that's a very meaningful and very productive venture. The Hainan Free Port is one of the most exciting things that happened in China because it is the biggest economic experiment and it's important for Malaysians with the logistic hub itself to be able to participate in such a free port system," he told Bernama after the launch of the documentary.
The launch event was attended by Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Head of TV Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali, who is also the documentary's executive producer, along with officials from both agencies.
Looking ahead, Wong mentioned that future collaboration between both parties could also explore short-form videos and social media content to reach younger audiences, as Hainan also has other developments that could be highlighted to Malaysian audiences, including its aviation and aeronautical programs. He pointed out that not many Malaysians are aware of Hainan's advanced aviation and aeronautical programs and encouraged them to explore the region's geographical proximity to Malaysia, noting that it is just two and a half hours by flight from Hainan to Sabah and three hours to Kuala Lumpur.
