BFAR, other gov’t agencies working to mitigate impact of oil spill

MANILA: The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) said Monday it is working with partner government authorities to mitigate the potential impact on marine life and public health following the capsizing of the motor tanker (MT) Terra Nova in Bataan.

In a statement, BFAR said it is monitoring catch landings to ensure that unloaded catch has no traces of oil.

The bureau said fish samples from Limay, Orion, Balanga City, and Samal in Bataan tested Monday for taste (cooked fish), raw odor, and cooked odor all passed the sensory analysis.

“Succeeding tests with third-party laboratories for presence of oil and grease, and harmful contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) will also be carried out,” it said.

The BFAR urged fisherfolk to immediately report any oil slick sighting, avoid contaminated areas, use personal protective equipment when necessary, immediately harvest shellfish or fish in the surrounding area, and prevent further contamination by maint
aining proper waste disposal and regular boat maintenance.

“As of this writing, the Bureau has not issued a fishing ban over adjacent waters still unaffected by the oil spill,” it said.

“DA-BFAR urges fisherfolk and the general public to remain calm and monitor the situation through updates issued by government authorities including DA-BFAR,” BFAR added.
