BI to cancel visa of Chinese nat’l after drug smuggling attempt

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Tuesday said it is working on the cancellation of the visa of a Chinese national following his attempt to smuggle illegal drugs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). In a statement, BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said violation of the country’s laws and policies is already a “sufficient ground” for visa cancellation. The NAIA Anti-Illegal Drugs Inter-Agency Task Group (AIDIATG) arrested 52-year-old Qian Qiang at the NAIA Terminal 3 on Aug. 10. ‘Foreign nationals who do not respect our laws do not deserve our country’s hospitality. We will initiate cancellation of his visa and deportation against Qian,’ he said. Qian was already on board a China Southern flight bound for Guangzhou, China when he was intercepted by the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) personnel. Authorities discovered ammunition and around PHP34,000 worth of illegal drugs in his shoe soles upon inspection. “Inspectors then cut up the sole of his shoe, and found 2 22LR ammunition rounds and a plastic container containing more or less 5 grams methamphetamine hydrochloride, more commonly known as shabu,” the BI said. The BI is processing deportation procedures against Qian alongside the cancellation of his valid visa.
