Budget 2026: LKIM Seeks Allocation To Repair Ageing Fish Landing Complexes

Kuala lumpur: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) expressed hopes that the government will allocate funds under the 2026 Budget, to be tabled in October, to repair ageing fish landing complexes and facilities across the country.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil stated that the agency has identified more than 10 dilapidated fish landing complexes in need of urgent repairs. Among the complexes highlighted are those in Chendering, Kemaman, and Dungun in Terengganu; Kota Tinggi in Johor; and Lumut in Perak. Faiz emphasized that securing a budget for the rehabilitation of these complexes is a primary concern. The agency is currently conducting studies to determine the necessary upgrades, with the Public Works Department evaluating the required allocation.

Faiz also expressed hope that the government would continue existing initiatives and assistance for fishermen, aimed at safeguarding their welfare and motivating them to be more productive. He specifically mentioned the importance of continuing key initiatives, including the RM1.6 billion fuel subsidy allocated this year, the fishermen's housing project, and the rehabilitation of ageing fish landing complexes.

Addressing requests from fishermen regarding import duty exemptions on fishing equipment, Faiz noted that any adjustments would require careful study and deliberation at both the ministry and Cabinet levels. He stressed the need to review import duties in the upcoming Budget 2026 to ensure the sustainability and financial stability of the fishing industry. Concerns have also been raised about the imposition of the sales and service tax (SST) on various aquaculture materials.
