Selangor: Wider job opportunities through Budget 2027 are needed to ensure the 9,469 Bumiputera G1 to G4 contractors in Selangor remain resilient in the construction industry. Selangor's Malay Contractors Association of Malaysia (PKMM) president, Latif Wagiman, emphasized the importance of continuing to provide small-scale contractors with projects such as road maintenance, repairs, drainage, school buildings, and community halls.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, most G1 to G4 contractors have successfully completed small projects in villages over the years. Latif expressed hope that the government can allocate suitable projects to over 60 percent of these contractors to ensure their continued employment and business sustainability. He proposed an increase in the allocation for Bumiputera small contractors to RM4 billion under Budget 2027, up from RM2.4 billion in Budget 2026.

Latif pointed out that the requested increase is not merely for additional projects but to fortify the position of small contractors within the country's construction industry supply chain. He stressed the need for fair opportunities, reasonable rates, and payment methods that do not strain cash flow. Additionally, he suggested enhancing distribution mechanisms for projects through balloting, quotations, and tenders to ensure transparency and equity for eligible contractors.

Latif also highlighted the necessity for improved support in financing, training, technology, and financial management to boost the competitiveness of small contractors. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi disclosed that the ministry received 30 strategic proposals from the construction industry to consider as input for Budget 2027, focusing on productivity, technology adoption, and industry competitiveness.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to present Budget 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat on October 9.
