Budget 2027 Tax Measures to Strengthen Malaysia’s Economic Resilience

Kuala Lumpur:The tax measures outlined in Malaysia's Budget 2027 are anticipated to bolster business competitiveness, foster domestic investment, and enhance the country's economic resilience in the face of increasing operating costs and global uncertainties, according to tax experts.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ernst and Young Tax Consultants Sdn Bhd Malaysia tax managing partner Farah Rosley highlighted that the budget provides immediate relief for lower- and middle-income households and smaller businesses. It also emphasizes long-term growth through productivity enhancement, workforce development, technology adoption, and investment attraction.

Farah Rosley noted that the fiscal discipline and targeted support in the budget signify a shift towards structural reforms aimed at building a resilient, innovative, and higher-value economy. Successful implementation, policy certainty, and public-private collaboration are essential for achieving meaningful outcomes for businesses and investors.

Deloitte Malaysia Tax Leader Sim Kwang Gek remarked that the budget focuses on strengthening Malaysia's economic foundations without introducing new tax reforms. The approach centers on enhancing competitiveness, encouraging investment, and supporting productivity improvements.

Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM) president Alan Chung pointed out that tax savings for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will help maintain financial resilience amidst rising costs due to inflation and geopolitical tensions. The extension of relief periods is expected to ease cash flow pressures and encourage domestic investment.

Chung also mentioned the enhanced Green Technology Tax Incentive, which includes new activities like ocean thermal energy conversion and expands assets eligible for tax incentives, supporting the local green industry and creating skilled jobs.

Deloitte Malaysia Country Managing Partner Yee Wing Peng commented that efforts to reduce the fiscal deficit while investing in economic and social development demonstrate the government's commitment to fiscal sustainability. Investments in AI, digitalization, education, and infrastructure are seen as drivers of future growth.

Deloitte Malaysia Global Employer Services leader Ang Weina stated that Budget 2027 aims to strengthen the financial resilience of middle-income households through tax reductions and housing-related incentives. The budget also supports the "sandwich generation" with enhanced reliefs to alleviate the financial burden of caring for dependents.

Overall, the measures in Budget 2027 reflect a balanced approach to addressing immediate economic challenges while promoting sustainable growth and financial security.
