Penang:A burst pipe in Kampung Lokan has led to an unexpected water supply disruption, impacting 130,790 consumers across Seberang Perai Utara as well as the Southwest and Northeast districts of Penang island.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan stated that the disruption is anticipated to be resolved by 835 pm today. Water supply is expected to be restored to 95 percent of the affected consumers by 8 am the following day.
The pipeline burst, involving a 300-millimeter pipeline, was discovered at 1130 pm yesterday, resulting in flooding in the village. This pipe is linked to a larger 1,350mm-diameter main pipeline. To conduct repairs, PBAPP shut down the 1,350mm pipeline at 205 am today. This pipeline is vital as it supplies treated water from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant to Penang's twin submarine pipelines in Butterworth.
The shutdown reduced the volume of treated water being pumped from the Sungai Dua plant, causing low water pressure or supply interruptions in several regions. Pathmanathan noted that repair teams were scheduled to begin welding works at 230 pm today. PBAPP has also activated its Emergency Response Protocol to gradually restore water supply to the affected consumers.
