Cabinet Paper on Bukit Merah Water Transfer Project to Be Discussed This Week: Perak MB

Perak: The Cabinet paper addressing the critical water shortage in northern Perak through the Bukit Merah water transfer project is set to be discussed in this week's cabinet meeting. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad emphasized the importance of considering state government inputs, as water supply is a state prerogative.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the proposed project involves the collaboration of the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) and Gamuda as the main implementers, with a focus on involving local small contractors. This decision aligns with the state's strategy to leverage local expertise and resources.

Saarani, speaking at a press conference during the Customer Day Programme at Teluk Intan Municipal Council Hall, Langkap, highlighted the project's economic benefits. The RM6.2 billion initiative, a joint venture between PKNPk and Gamuda Bhd, aims to address agricultural irrigation needs and support the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP).

The project's alignment has been carefully planned through workshops with state representatives, ensuring it meets Perak's specific water needs. Saarani expressed a desire for expedited implementation, stressing the potential to sell excess water to Penang if available.

Notably, the state government mandated last July that Gamuda Bhd and PKNPk design, build, and operate the facility in Kerian. Expected to begin operations by 2030, the project will operate under a privatization agreement, with a concession period of at least 40 years.
