Cambodia and Thailand Set to Sign Landmark Peace Agreement in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala lumpur: Cambodia and Thailand are poised to sign a peace agreement today, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. Anwar highlighted the significance of this agreement, emphasizing the power of understanding and dialogue in overcoming uncertainty.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar remarked that the signing would showcase the transformative power of conviction, underscoring reconciliation as a courageous choice that can redefine the future of nations. The event is attended by prominent leaders, including Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, among others.

The peace agreement is set against the backdrop of longstanding border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia, which recently escalated into a military confrontation. The agreement is seen as a major milestone for ASEAN, reflecting the bloc's dedication to stability and cooperation under Malaysia's ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability."

The conflict, centered on an 817-kilometer border, saw recent tensions that were diffused by a high-stakes meeting hosted by Anwar in Putrajaya on July 28. The ceasefire achieved during that meeting is considered a significant achievement for ASEAN, preventing further military escalation and ensuring civilian safety.

As Malaysia hosts the 47th ASEAN Summit from October 26 to 28, Anwar reiterated Malaysia's commitment to realigning ASEAN's priorities to remain resilient and relevant. He also addressed the ongoing situation in Myanmar, stressing the need for Myanmar-led reconciliation guided by the Five-Point Consensus.

The peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand is expected to set a precedent for regional diplomacy, highlighting ASEAN's role in conflict prevention and its commitment to fostering peace and cooperation among its member states.
