Cameron highlands: The Ministry of Works (KKR) has acknowledged concerns raised about the Cameron Highlands Bypass Project following recent flash floods and landslides in the area, which has led to calls for a temporary suspension of the project. In response, the Public Works Department (JKR) clarified that the project is still at the design and assessment study stage.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, JKR has stated that the project encompasses the construction of the Tanah Rata Bypass, as well as the upgrading of Federal Road FT59 from Tanah Rata to Kea Farm and Federal Road FT434 (Jalan Griddle). The department emphasized that no physical construction has started, apart from routine maintenance on existing roads. They refuted claims linking recent flash floods to the project's construction activities.

Preliminary investigations by JKR revealed that the floods in Taman MARDI and Padang Awam of Tanah Rata were on secondary roads, not part of the project's main alignment. A minor landslide occurred on Jalan Tengkolok, which is within the project scope for routine maintenance. Debris was promptly cleared to ensure safety and traffic flow.

The Ministry of Works assured that they take issues of slope safety, geological conditions, drainage, and disaster risks seriously. The project will proceed only after meeting all necessary assessments and technical conditions mandated by relevant authorities, including Environmental and Social Impact Assessments and geotechnical requirements.

JKR confirmed that construction will not commence until all requisite approvals and conditions are satisfied.
