Kuala Lumpur: A Chinese couple has been fined RM5,000 each after pleading guilty to causing a ruckus at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2. Magistrate Muhammad Bukhori Md Ruslan imposed the penalty on Xu Jianfeng, 27, and his wife Shi Qian, 28. The couple admitted to the charges, which were read in Mandarin by an interpreter.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the couple will serve three months in jail if they fail to pay the fine. The charge sheet indicated that the pair caused a public nuisance at Gate Q5 of KLIA Terminal 2 by engaging in indecent acts, including removing their clothes. The charge was framed under Section 294(a) of the Penal Code, which allows for a sentence of up to three months in prison, a fine, or both.
The defendants' counsel, Chew Sin Yee, requested a minimum fine, highlighting that the couple had shown remorse and apologised for their actions. Chew also noted that the incident did not disturb anyone.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Faraheen Yahya argued for a more severe punishment to serve as a lesson in maintaining public decorum and deterring indecent acts. The media reported that the couple, who caused a disturbance on a flight to Jieyan Chaosan, China, on February 9, were arrested after confirming they had no mental health issues.
