Chinese EV Charging Solutions Make Inroads in Malaysia with Local Adaptation

Kuala lumpur: Chinese smart charging solutions for new electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining a foothold in Malaysia as the country's EV market is expected to accelerate over the next three to five years. Xi'an LINCHR New Energy Technology Co Ltd (LINCHR) chairman, Yuan Qingmin, emphasized the critical link between EVs and charging infrastructure, noting that delays in one could constrain the growth of the other.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Yuan highlighted that while China has been an early adopter of EVs and related infrastructure, technology transfer must involve more than just replicating China's experience. Instead, it should be adapted to suit Malaysia's local conditions through a process of localisation and research and development. LINCHR is actively participating in the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE 2026), being held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).

Additionally, LINCHR is collaborating with local EV charger manufacturer, Swift Bridge Technologies Sdn Bhd, to develop charging infrastructure in Malaysia. Their collaboration extends to charging infrastructure standards, products, technology, and engineering design. Speaking to Bernama, Yuan expressed that GATE 2026 offers LINCHR an opportunity to engage with government agencies, energy companies, operators, and industry players within Malaysia's charging infrastructure sector.

LINCHR's testing technology solutions currently command over 70 percent of China's market share. Yuan stated that overseas expansion necessitates technology transfer to local partners alongside local research and development (R and D) initiatives. He warned that simply replicating Chinese technology without adaptation might meet basic requirements but may not suit the Malaysian market. For instance, LINCHR has incorporated an oil-immersed insulation design for the printed circuit boards (PCBs) of its charging stations to enhance resistance to salt spray corrosion given Malaysia's hot and humid climate.

On standards and testing, Yuan noted that LINCHR, Swift Bridge, and the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) signed a tripartite cooperation agreement in March last year. This collaboration has led to joint efforts on charging infrastructure testing and certification standards, as well as upgrading equipment testing laboratories.

Looking forward, Yuan stated that as EVs become more connected and intelligent, charging technology would need to evolve. He envisioned a future where EVs could be charged at home, workplaces, or while idle, with surplus electricity being fed back into the grid. This evolution could transform EVs from electricity consumers into 'mobile energy' sources that interact with the grid.
