Kuala lumpur: The government has initiated cloud-seeding operations starting today, aimed at increasing water levels in major dams and mitigating the effects of the current hot weather across several states.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, announced this measure following a weather status report indicating that Kota Setar in Kedah has reached Level 2 heat wave status. This classification is due to daily maximum temperatures consistently exceeding 37 to 40 degrees Celsius over the past three days.
He further detailed that areas in Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Perak, Pahang, and Johor are experiencing Level 1 alert status, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. In response, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability (NRES), in collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), will conduct the cloud-seeding operations to counteract these challenging weather conditions.
The operations, scheduled to run until April 9, will primarily target major dams in Perak, Kedah, Perlis, and Johor. This initiative aims to ensure a steady water supply for both domestic and agricultural purposes. Arthur emphasized the objective of these operations is not only to replenish dam water levels but also to provide moisture to the ecosystem, thereby minimizing the risk of forest and peatland fires.
He noted that the success of the cloud-seeding efforts hinges on favorable atmospheric conditions, particularly the presence of suitable cumulus clouds and minimal wind speeds. The MetMalaysia technical team will be actively monitoring weather conditions to identify target locations that would yield the most significant impact.
Arthur urged the public to adopt precautionary measures such as minimizing outdoor activities during the afternoon, staying hydrated, and using protective gear like hats or umbrellas when outdoors. Additionally, he called for prudent water usage and discouraged open burning to help maintain air quality and support environmental sustainability.
