Coastal Erosion Control Efforts in Kuala Nerus Progress Steadily

Kuala nerus: The federal government, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), is currently undertaking the Kuala Nerus Coastal Erosion Control Project, aimed at addressing erosion issues along Pantai Batu Rakit in Kuala Nerus.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat announced that the project includes the construction of 16 breakwater units and beach nourishment activities spanning a two-kilometre area. The initiative is expected to be completed by January 14, 2027, and is reportedly on track with 49.46 percent of the work concluded so far.

Datuk Hanafiah Mat emphasized that the project design is informed by comprehensive technical studies that analyze wave patterns, coastal currents, and sand deposition along the affected coastline. He conveyed these details during a winding-up debate at the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly, underscoring the need for an integrated approach to coastal conservation that encompasses both shoreline and river estuaries.

Additionally, Hanafiah highlighted that the state government is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) on November 24. This agreement aims to foster transit-oriented economic development through Transit Oriented Development (TOD) along the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) station alignment in Terengganu. Initial works, including site-clearing over an area of 242 hectares, have already commenced this year and will extend into the subsequent year.
