KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) is on track, with infrastructure works reaching 95 percent completion as of last November, according to Malaysia’s Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah. The Senate was informed of these developments today, highlighting significant progress in this cross-border transportation project.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ongoing installation of other system components, such as rolling stock, signalling, power supply, distribution, and telecommunications, began earlier this month. The Malaysian government has invested RM2.5 million in completing the civil infrastructure on their side of the RTS project, with a total allocation of RM5.2 billion dedicated to the entire endeavor.
During a Senate session, in response to a query from Senator Datuk Halim Suleiman, Hasbi elaborated on the RTS Link’s capacity, stating that it is designed to accommodate up to 100,000 passengers daily. Trains are planned to operate at in
tervals of 3.6 minutes during peak hours. The service is anticipated to commence operations on December 31, 2026, with an expected daily ridership of 30,000 to 40,000 passengers in its first year.
Hasbi also mentioned that Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd (MRTS), as InfraCo Malaysia, has provided early access to RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO) at the Wadi Hana Depot. This access allows the service operator to commence installation of the trackworks, marking a key milestone in preparing for the project’s operational phase.
