Kuala lumpur: Strategic cooperation with Russia and Turkmenistan will strengthen Malaysia's energy supply security for decades, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin assured Malaysia of a long-term agreement for the supply of oil, gas, and diesel for at least 20 years, highlighting the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar mentioned that the assurance from Russia was communicated during discussions in Kazan, reflecting the lasting friendship between Malaysia and Russia. He shared this information while speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Setia Fontaines Industrial Park.
Anwar also pointed out that his recent official visit to Turkmenistan resulted in significant progress, as the country granted new access to Malaysia in the oil and gas sector. This development is expected to secure Malaysia's energy needs over the long term, providing access to one of the largest gas reserves in the world.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this access would not only meet the country's energy needs but also enhance export capabilities to partner countries with high energy demands, including China, Japan, and South Korea.
Anwar attributed the agreement's success to the positive relations and negotiations between Malaysia and Turkmenistan, which have been ongoing since President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's visit to Malaysia in December 2024. He stressed the importance of leveraging international relations to protect national interests, ensuring energy security, job creation, and economic development for the Malaysian people.
