Court Orders Chinese Student to Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation Over Attempted Murder Charges

Kuala lumpur: A university student facing serious charges, including eight counts of attempted murder and causing injury to seven individuals, has been directed to undergo a month-long psychiatric evaluation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sessions Court Judge Normastura Ayub and Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil granted the application made by Deputy Public Prosecutors Faelly Jeffrey Lanjungan and Siti Nur Alia Safri. The prosecutors argued that the accused, Liu Ting, a 24-year-old Chinese national, appeared disoriented and failed to comprehend the charges when they were presented in court.

Consequently, the court denied bail for Liu and ordered her to be transferred to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Tanjung Rambutan in Perak for a psychiatric assessment. The case has been scheduled for mention on September 19.

The prosecution, led by Faelly, opposed bail due to the gravity of the charges and the non-bailable nature of the offenses. They emphasized the necessity for Liu to receive psychiatric treatment at Hospital Bahagia due to her apparent confusion during the court proceedings.

In the Sessions Court, Liu entered a plea of not guilty to three charges, which included the attempted murder of two men aged 19 and 21, and causing injury to a 35-year-old woman. If convicted of these charges, which fall under Section 307 of the Penal Code, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine, with the potential for a 20-year sentence if the act results in injury.

Furthermore, Liu also pleaded not guilty to two additional charges of grievous bodily harm. These involved slashing a 60-year-old woman's arm and stabbing a 27-year-old man in the stomach with a knife, both under Section 326 of the Penal Code. Conviction could result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years, along with a fine or whipping.

In the Magistrate's Court, Liu faced additional charges of causing injury to two men, aged 21 and 49, and a woman aged 53, using a knife. Although she comprehended these charges, Liu remained silent and did not enter a plea. These charges fall under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment or a fine or whipping, or a combination of the punishments upon conviction.

The alleged incidents took place on August 13, between 11:39 am and noon, at Jalan Besar, the Semenyih Persimpangan Metropoint junction, and within the Metropoint Complex premises. A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, depicting a woman involved in a vehicular accident who emerged wielding a knife, followed by scenes of several injured motorcyclists and bystanders attempting to restrain her.
