Cross-Border Transport Agreement Expected at Upcoming Leaders’ Retreat

Singapore: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cross-border transport, including e-hailing services, is anticipated to be signed at the 12th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat 2025, scheduled for early December in Singapore. Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed the development, noting that while discussions have been held, specific details and official decisions will be announced at the retreat. The event will be attended by Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Loke mentioned that the two transport ministries have reached an understanding, but emphasized that the official announcement will take place at the upcoming retreat. He shared these insights with the media after officiating the 2025 Pesta Rel Kluang at Laman Rel Mahkota.

This announcement follows Loke's statement on August 18, where he expressed readiness to discuss the implementation of cross-border e-hailing services between Johor and Singapore. The proposal had been initially raised with Singapore's former Transport Minister, Chee Hong Tat, but Singapore was not ready to engage in discussions at that time.

Currently, cross-border travel is facilitated by the reciprocal Cross-Border Taxi Scheme. This arrangement allows up to 200 licensed taxis from each country to transport passengers between Singapore and Johor Bahru. Under the scheme, Singaporean taxis operate from Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru, while Malaysian taxis are based at Terminal Jalan Ban San in Singapore.

The Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat is an annual high-level platform that brings together the two Prime Ministers to review bilateral relations and finalize key areas of strategic cooperation.
