Kuala Lumpur: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has revealed the investigation of 31 cases last year concerning the smuggling of imitation small arms into Malaysia, resulting in seizures valued at RM1.8 million.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, JKDM disclosed in a statement that four cases-three in Sarawak and one at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)-involved the importation of fake firearms through Pos Malaysia services. The statement highlighted that all parcels processed at the Mail and Courier Centre undergo comprehensive scanning, with Customs and Pos Malaysia officers present during sorting. Parcels containing prohibited items are subject to confiscation.
The department further explained that smuggling operations often employ false or misleading declarations to bring in prohibited goods like imitation firearms. JKDM has committed to curbing firearms smuggling by implementing proactive measures to prevent the unauthorized entry of firearms.
Moreover, the department has engaged in international operations aimed at controlling firearms at national entry points, participating in initiatives such as the GS APSP II (Global Shield) operation and the Small Arms and Light Weapon, Asia Pacific Security Project. Collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Pos Malaysia International Hub (PMIH), and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is also a part of their strategy.
JKDM mentioned that it has conducted several engagement series to prevent the import and export of prohibited items, including drugs, wildlife, and firearms, to and from Malaysia.
