Kuala lumpur: A total of 1,009 public complaints regarding damaged or abandoned vehicles were reported to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) from early January to May this year. Out of these, 992 complaints have been successfully resolved, while the remaining 17 cases are still under investigation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa stated that the complaints originated from 11 parliamentary constituencies in Kuala Lumpur. Segambut recorded the highest number of complaints at 163, followed by Seputeh with 143, Setiawangsa with 113, and Bukit Bintang with 81. Dr. Zaliha explained that DBKL's Enforcement Department is responsible for managing these vehicles, transporting them to three designated depots: Taman Connaught Depot, Pantai Sentral Depot, and Jalan Emas Depot, which are used for storage and disposal.
Dr. Zaliha highlighted that DBKL is taking steps to expedite the disposal process for unclaimed vehicles through gazetting, although this can be time-consuming to ensure that vehicles are not reclaimed by owners or their next of kin. She addressed these issues during a question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat, responding to a query from Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang) about the number of abandoned or damaged vehicles reported to DBKL from the beginning of 2025 until now.
She emphasized the need for vehicle owners to take responsibility for disposing of their own damaged or abandoned vehicles. DBKL's observations indicate an increasing urgency in addressing unclaimed vehicles, often due to the owner's death without a next of kin to manage the vehicle, or due to personal sentimental reasons.
Dr. Zaliha mentioned the introduction of the e-Dereg system by the Road Transport Department, which allows vehicle owners to cancel their registration online through the JPJ digital platform. This system facilitates the transfer of vehicles to the Authorised Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF) registered with the Department of Environment, simplifying the process as owners need not visit the JPJ office. AATF covers the cost of transportation and disposal, completing the process in less than an hour. Additionally, owners receive compensation based on the vehicle's condition, which can be used to settle any outstanding summonses.
