Kuala lumpur: The Court of Appeal today set December 5 for the decision on Segambut Member of Parliament Hannah Yeoh's appeal concerning the High Court's dismissal of her defamation suit against former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan. The controversy stems from statements made by Musa at a forum held at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, lawyer Lim Wei Jiet, representing Hannah, informed reporters that the decision date was established by Court of Appeal deputy registrar Radzilawatee Abdul Rahman during e-Review case management proceedings. The proceedings were also attended by lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, who represents Musa.
On October 17, a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal, comprising Datuk Azimah Omar, Datuk Dr Choo Kah Sing, and Datuk Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman, postponed the appeal decision after hearing submissions from all involved parties. Hannah, who is also the Minister of Youth and Sports, filed an appeal against the High Court's decision on December 23, 2024, after her initial suit against Musa was dismissed.
Judicial Commissioner Arziah Mohamed Apandi made the High Court decision, concluding that Hannah had not proven the statement made by Musa to be defamatory. Hannah had initially filed the suit in 2020, alleging that Musa's remarks at the January 30, 2020 forum included accusations that she aimed to make Malaysia a Christian country through her book, "Becoming Hannah," and that she had connections with Christian and Jewish missionaries to undermine Islam and Malaysia, while prioritizing her personal interests over national interests.
