Kuala lumpur: The Mid-Term Review of the Defence White Paper launched today outlines new challenges and strategic directions to strengthen the nation's defence resilience. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced the launch of the 2024 Mid-Term Review, which aims to assess the effectiveness of current policies, examine the present defence context, and chart a new strategic direction to align with the contemporary security landscape.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the review identified emerging security challenges, particularly those posed by advanced technologies that have introduced new defence threats. The review also emphasized the increasingly serious challenges in the South China Sea, alongside non-traditional threats that necessitate a role for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) beyond conventional warfare.
Mohamed Khaled highlighted that tensions in the South China Sea could escalate the risk of unintended military clashes. The presence of major power warships and the rise in military aircraft operations could further exacerbate the situation. Additionally, he pointed out the use of subtle non-military strategies, such as hydrographic research activities shielded by foreign coast guard vessels within Malaysia's Exclusive Economic Zone, which could provoke and threaten national sovereignty.
To navigate these challenges, Mohamed Khaled outlined a strategic direction focused on the continuous reform and transformation of the Future Force. This approach aims to place defence personnel and the populace at the heart of strengthening national defence comprehensively, ensuring that the MAF continues to be respected and recognized, particularly among regional partners.
