DENR: Marine research station to rise in Cagayan

MANILA: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is set to put up a marine research station in Sta. Ana, Cagayan, in partnership with the local government and the University of the Philippines – Marine Science Institute (UPMSI).

In a news release on Thursday, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said the municipality of Sta. Ana has been identified by the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the DENR as one of the six project sites nationwide.

The marine research stations will serve as a hub to enhance ocean science, resource management, and development strategies.

During her recent visit to the area, Loyzaga urged the municipal government and other stakeholders to protect and preserve the coastal and marine resources.

Sta. Ana is famous for its Palaui Island Protected Landscape and Seascape.

‘Sta Ana, Cagayan will be the northernmost site to serve as sentinel covering the Northern Philippine Sea marine biogeographic region,’ Loyzaga said, emphasizing the island’s beauty, diverse flor
a and fauna, and vast natural resources.

She added that according to extensive research conducted by the UPMSI, corals that live in the northern parts of the Philippines are resilient to climate change.

The DENR is working with the UPMSI to create further studies, in collaboration with the community, in making the area a center of education.
