Deputy PM Urges Public to Follow Met Malaysia for Earthquake Updates

Kuala lumpur: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the public to remain calm and rely solely on official updates from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) following minor earthquakes reported in Johor early this morning.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Zahid emphasized in a Facebook post that MET Malaysia is actively monitoring the situation and will issue updates as needed. He acknowledged the occurrence of a minor earthquake in Segamat and assured the public that MET Malaysia is conducting follow-up monitoring and will release information periodically.

Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, cautioned against the spread of unverified information that could lead to confusion. He advised the public to stay calm and refer only to official sources, urging them to avoid sharing false news that may cause panic. He also called on Malaysians to pray for continued safety and protection.

Earlier reports from MET Malaysia detailed a 4.1-magnitude tremor in Segamat at 6.13 am, followed by a 2.8-magnitude aftershock at 9 am in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, located about 28 kilometers northwest of Kluang. Police confirmed receiving three reports of property damage, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
