Kuala lumpur: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi paid his final respects to former Transport Minister and MCA honorary life president, Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, today at the Xiao En Centre. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including MCA President Wee Ka Siong, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Steven Sim Chee Keong, and former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, among others.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, described Dr Ling as a mentor outside UMNO, highlighting his significant influence in politics. He recounted how Dr Ling led the MCA and served as a minister for 17 years, playing a pivotal role in fortifying cooperation among BN component parties. Ahmad Zahid also mentioned Dr Ling's brief tenure as BN chairman during a critical period when UMNO was temporarily banned.
Khairy Jamaluddin, former UMNO Youth chief, remembered Dr Ling as a highly respected statesman whose contributions were instrumental in achieving political stability during the 1980s and 1990s. He noted that this stability, fostered by close cooperation between MCA under Dr Ling and other BN parties, significantly contributed to the country's economic growth. Khairy expressed hope that Dr Ling's legacy would inspire current BN leaders.
Dr Ling passed away on Saturday at the age of 82, leaving behind his wife and two sons, Ling Hee Leong and Ling Hee Keat. Known as one of the longest-serving Cabinet members, he helmed the Transport Ministry for 17 years from 1986 until his resignation in 2003.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook paid homage to Dr Ling for his substantial legacy in developing the nation's transport infrastructure. He credited Dr Ling with initiating significant projects like Westports, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), and the double-tracking railway project, which continue to benefit Malaysia today.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo also lauded Dr Ling as a respected figure in the country's political history, sharing personal anecdotes about his family's connections with Dr Ling. Gobind emphasized the enduring impact of Dr Ling's leadership on Malaysia's development.
Today's tribute was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching, who all gathered to honor Dr Ling's legacy and contributions to the nation.
