KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat engaged in an extensive debate over the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report concerning the handling of sovereignty issues related to Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge. The report suggests potential criminal investigations against former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, presented the motion, emphasizing the government’s dedication to facilitating discussions among Members of Parliament on the issue. She highlighted that the report is indicative of the MADANI Government’s commitment to managing sovereignty matters with efficiency and integrity. The debate aims to guide the government in addressing the report’s recommendations comprehensively.
Azalina identified the mishandling of the case and the decision against pursuing a review application and interpretation request as major factors in Malaysia’s permanent loss of Ba
tu Puteh. The RCI’s findings provide insights into the actions taken by various individuals within the administration, civil servants, and consultants, both local and international, involved in the matter.
A total of 10 Members of Parliament from both government and opposition parties contributed to the debate on the RCI report. The 217-page document, circulated to MPs on December 5, proposes that criminal investigations against Dr Mahathir be considered under specific sections of the Penal Code.
The International Court of Justice ruled on May 23, 2008, that Singapore holds sovereignty over Batu Puteh, while Middle Rocks is under Malaysian jurisdiction. The ownership of South Ledge will be determined based on the delimitation of territorial waters of the involved nations.
