Disaster Preparedness Must Be Based on Science and Technology, Says DPM Ahmad Zahid

Kuala lumpur: Science-, data- and technology-based preparedness has been outlined as a strategic direction to strengthen national disaster management in a more structured manner, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, emphasized that disaster management can no longer rely solely on institutions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid highlighted the necessity of leveraging big data, predictive analytics, and integrating weather, geospatial, and social risk information. He advocated for strengthening smart early warning systems and institutionalizing the anticipatory action approach to act before disasters occur, not only after damage has taken place. He made these remarks during his 2026 New Year address to the staff of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).

The event was attended by NADMA director-general Meor Ismail Meor Akim and Malaysian Special Search and Rescue Team (SMART) commander Abdul Manaf Che Isa. Ahmad Zahid pointed out other strategic directions including rapid, coordinated, and disciplined action, as well as humanitarian efforts grounded in values and empathy. Operational efficiency in the field, he said, depends on clear command structures, standard national response protocols, integrated training, and consistent crisis simulations.

Ahmad Zahid stressed that the safety and dignity of victims must be prioritized, advocating for a people-centred approach as the foundation, with assistance delivered swiftly, fairly, and with integrity. He also expressed his desire for the management of the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon to serve as a new benchmark in national disaster management. Early preparations initiated through meetings of the Central Disaster Management Committee, followed by consistent coordination at the operational level, have proven successful.

He noted that cooperation across ministries, departments, agencies, and state governments can reduce delays, minimize confusion, and accelerate responses when people are in critical situations. Additionally, he announced that the SMART team will undergo the INSARAG External Reclassification this year to strengthen its technical capabilities and enhance the country's image through its involvement in international disaster relief and response missions.
