Sabah: The Department of Fisheries (DOF) has planted 3,750 first-generation coral seedlings at the Layang-Layang Reef in Sabah, covering 5,000 square metres. This initiative is part of the celebrations for World Oceans Week 2026, aimed at bolstering the recovery of Malaysia's marine ecosystems.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, DOF director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain announced the installation of 600 coral settlement tiles at Pulau Redang to aid in the rehabilitation of damaged coral reef areas. He emphasized that the activities during World Oceans Week serve as a platform to enhance various conservation projects undertaken by the DOF in collaboration with strategic partners and local communities.
Additionally, the DOF is advancing the Blue Barrier Project by installing 1,600 metres of conservation zone buoys and 37 boat mooring buoys at Perhentian Island, Terengganu. This is to safeguard sensitive marine areas from physical harm. In a bid to conserve endangered marine species, 790 turtle hatchlings, including hawksbill turtles, have been released into their natural habitats in Terengganu, Johor, and Melaka, supporting the conservation of protected marine species and improving the survival rates of turtle populations in Malaysian waters.
These initiatives for World Oceans Week 2026 were executed in collaboration with government agencies, higher education institutions, non-governmental organizations, and local communities, ensuring the preservation of the nation's fisheries resources and marine ecosystems.
