DOH urges self-breast examination for early cancer detection

The Department of Health (DOH) in the Cordillera is urging women to do self-breast examination and seek consultation if they feel something unusual.

Rock Tubaña, Nurse III at the DOH-CAR and the cancer focal person, in a briefing here Thursday said that according to clinical studies, early detection of any kind of cancer gives an individual a higher chance of recovery.

Tubaña said that based on a 2022 report of the World Health Organization (WHO), one in 12 women is diagnosed with breast cancer and one of the 71 diagnosed women usually dies of it.

The same report said that in 2022, there were 2.3 million cases of breast cancer worldwide, with 670,000 deaths.

In the Philippines, Tubaña said there are around 33,079 cases of breast cancer, which is among the leading causes of death among women.

The official said a Regional Cancer Control Committee has been formed in the Cordillera to help in the dissemination of the information about self-breast examination as well as what to do or where to go for informati
on, assistance and check-up.

He said services in government hospitals and the Baguio City cancer clinic are free and that cancer treatment is covered by Philhealth
