Kuala lumpur: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has advised Malaysians not to be afraid to display their patriotism and fly the Jalur Gemilang during the national month. Fahmi, who also serves as the MADANI Government spokesperson, said the patriotic spirit of the people should not be dampened by the attempts made by some individuals to instil fear around activities involving the national flag.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi emphasized that people should not feel scared as a small group of individuals tries to stir up sentiment and exploit the situation to intimidate others. He urged citizens not to take action on behalf of authorities, as the police and the Attorney General's Chambers are responsible for investigations and prosecutions. Fahmi made these remarks at the opening of a programme to promote cultural arts with the Pantai Dalam community.
On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that there would be no more warnings or reprimands, but instead strict action would be taken against those inciting ethnic, religious, and cultural tensions in Malaysia. Anwar pointed out harmful elements such as the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir, allegedly due to bullying, and the recent incident of the upside-down display of the Jalur Gemilang, must be addressed immediately.
Fahmi further urged relevant parties not to take the law into their own hands and to trust the authorities to perform their duties. He stated that during this National Month, flying the Jalur Gemilang proudly and without fear serves as a reminder that Malaysia belongs to everyone.
When questioned by reporters about calls to boycott National Day celebrations if Zara Qairina's case remains unresolved, Fahmi insisted this should not occur as these celebrations are national events meant for everyone. He expressed his desire for justice for Zara and emphasized that the law is already in place with Bukit Aman taking over the investigation. An inquest has been requested, and Fahmi believes a date will be set soon, recognizing that the justice process takes time.
Fahmi concluded by expressing his belief that justice will be served and discouraged individuals from exploiting the situation for personal gain or popularity. He reiterated the importance of focusing on justice for Zara.
