Penang: Datuk Dr Jafri Abdul Jalil has been appointed the new Penang state secretary, effective today. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced the appointment, highlighting Jafri's extensive background and experience in various governmental roles.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Jafri, 58, previously served as the deputy director-general (Analysis) of the Research Division in the Prime Minister's Department. His career spans 32 years and includes significant contributions in research, policy, strategic planning, and disaster management operations. Jafri holds a Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science in the United Kingdom.

Tan Sri Shamsul Azri emphasized Jafri's vast experience in national security and administration, having worked with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA). He expressed confidence in Jafri's capability to lead the Penang state administration effectively, advance the state's development agenda, and enhance strategic cooperation between federal and state authorities for the betterment of the citizens.

Jafri takes over from Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long, 60, who concluded his service yesterday after serving as the state secretary since September 2024.
