Kuala lumpur: Safety measures along open drains in Taman Desa Kayangan, Sungai Karangan near here, must be upgraded immediately after a tragedy claimed the lives of four children on Monday. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols in the residential area, which currently has an open drainage system requiring fencing or iron grilles.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Saifuddin Nasution suggested that the installation work could be assigned to a blacksmith from Kampung Baru Gajah Merangkak, who is related to one of the victims. This proposition came during his visit to the grieving families, where he also presented welfare contributions. Saifuddin Nasution showed support for the residents' association's readiness to implement safety improvements in the housing area.

Residents' Committee chairman Mohd Hafiz Jaafar announced plans to immediately submit an application to enhance safety measures following the minister's recommendation. He pointed out the proximity of the playground to the drain as a significant hazard for children. The proposal received backing from Mohd Ashrofudin Ramdzon, the father of two children who died in the incident, who stressed the necessity of prompt action to avert future tragedies.

The incident involved four children-Muhamad Aeril Aziz Muhamad Zafis, 12, his stepbrother Muhammad Arif Naufan Abdullah, 8, Muhammad Zafril Arsyad Muhamad Azrin, 12, and Muhammad Iman Nuruddin Khairol Anuar, 10-who lost their lives after falling into a drain while trying to retrieve a ball.
